Keynote Address: Friday, October 18, 9:00 - 10:00 AM
Nurturning Self-Regulated Critical Thinkers
What does it mean to be a self-regulated learner? Why does it matter? And what are the keys to nurturing self-regulation in students? During the keynote, Garfield will examing the relationships between self-regulated learning, self-regulated learning and independent inquiry. He will also discuss why nurturing self-regulation is an important dimension of learning for all students. To ensure schools get beyond the rhetoric of self-regulation, Garfield will share three keys to nurturing self-regulated learning: making learning matter; ensuring clear learning targets focused on quality thinking; and, establishing routines to help make self-regulation an embedded part of learning.
1st Breakout Session: Friday, October 18, 10:15 - 11:15 AM
Creating Opportunities for Sustained Inquiry Through a Cascading Curriculum
Wiggins an McTighe began the conversation by developing Understanding By Design. Now take the next step by exploring how to frame your curriculum around a cascading model in which the learning flows from a rich, provocative question and task. Cascading from the central questions, students explore related lines of inquiry as they build their understanding, revise their thinking and uncover the big ideas in your course. During this session, participants will consider how designing learning through a cascading model can help to ensure design down learning takes place making thinking visible and allowing for powerful "assessment for" and "assessment as" learning.
2nd Breakout Session: Friday, October 18, 2:15 - 3:15 PM
Nurturing Self-Regulated Critical Thinkers
Properly used, assessment can be one of the most powerful tools in a teacher's toolkit. Using authentic inquiry engages learners, while providing timely and purposeful feedback helps to scaffold student learning ensuring success for all. Used in tandem, "assessment for" learning and "assessment of" learning creates a successful learning environment and motivates all learners. During this session, participants will examing the principles of effective assessment in the context of critial thinking. Several practical and innovative strategies for designing and implementing curriculum with critical inquiry at the core will be shared.
